Noosa Arts Theatre was formed in the early 1970s and has been providing community theatre ever since. We do not receive any on-going funding from the government or the council and work very hard to maintain our own theatre and also a high standard of productions for the benefit of our members and the Noosa community.
Being a member of a theatre group is unlike any other club or association. We do not hold regular meetings on regular nights. Because of this it is not always possible for prospective members to become involved straight away. However, there are two or three occasions during the year when all members are invited to join together as a group.
The theatre stages five or six productions each year. These are a mix of dramas, comedies and musicals. Auditions are held for every production, which gives all members, old and new, an equal chance of being chosen for a particular show.
Quite often there is no suitable part for some of our members for quite some time, so we encourage all members to volunteer in the many other aspects of the organisation, such as:
- Publicity and box office
- Design and construct the props, sets and scenery (and maintain the building)
- Costume design and making
- Design, rig and operate lighting; design and operate sound
- During performances: moving props and scenery back-stage; hair and make-up; ‘front-of-house’, either selling programs or raffle tickets, ushering, or bar.
Our theatre charges a very modest membership fee which is payable on application for membership and thereafter on the 1st of January annually. It is the theatre’s policy for all volunteers and performers to be members.
It also entitles the member to a reduction on ticket prices for shows at Noosa Arts Theatre. Each Single member is entitled to 1 ticket at member prices per performance. Couples can purchase 2 tickets per performance and Families can purchase 4. Other Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance venues may also offer discounted prices for members of Noosa Arts Theatre.
Our members are sent regular newsletters to keep them informed of theatre news and events, including auditions, social functions and special meetings.
We try to stage one show a year that is suitable for children to take part in, and so encourage young people who are interested in theatre.
Where possible, we hold workshops in various aspects of the theatre, for example, writing, lighting, directing, etc.
The theatre also runs an annual National One-Act Playwriting Competition, which is open to all established and aspiring playwrights. Featuring the Eleanor Nimmo Prize of $5,000 for Best Play. (More information is available on the Competitions page.)
Noosa Arts Theatre is a group of diverse people of all ages, who have one thing in common – a love of theatre! We would very much like you to come along and join us.
